Inspirational Song of the Month: I Am Light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am not the things my family did

I am not the voices in my head

I am not the pieces of the brokenness inside

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I’m not the mistakes that I have made or any of the things that caused me pain

I am not the pieces of the dream I left behind

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am light, I am light

I am not the color of my eyes

I am not the skin on the outside

I am not my age, I am not my race, my soul inside is all light

I am light, all light

I am light, all light

I am divinity defined

I am the God on the inside

I am a star, a piece of it all

I am light

Music is very powerful and has the ability to change lives if one is receptive to it. I have always been a lover of music as it was/is my escape and main coping mechanism aside from prayer. I don’t know anyone who does not like music and it would be extremely hard for someone to convince me that there are people is one person in this world who does not like music. With that said, I thought it would only be absolutely necessary to include a music component to this blog because music is an important part of my daily motivation.

Being a former singer, I learned naturally how to dissect song lyrics and really pay close attention to the message of a song including how it is received. You don’t have to be a singer to do that. All you have to do is hit play and just listen. Most importantly, everyone’s perception of the song can be different just as with any form of art. What truly matters is that the song helps you.

Many of India Arie’s songs have inspired me. The content of one of her more recent tunes entitled “I Am Light” is a song I believe most if not all people can relate to. This song is so fitting for the vibe of amanisoul because it is pretty much about peeling those layers that have developed from exposure to adversity. It digs deeper beneath the surface to reveal a more pure and renewed self perception. She is speaking to anyone who feels that they are a direct reflection of the things that have gone wrong in their lives be it voluntary or involuntary problems. At some point we all have felt this way in our lives. We attribute many of the negative experiences as being in the dark/darkness. The message? Regardless of the darkness that forms around us at times we are still light.   We are still the soul that lives within that cannot be broken or destroyed by the “bad things”.   We can be new.

Angelica is my name. I'm a licensed graduate social worker from the DMV who has love for everything mind, body, soul related. A devoted wife and mother whose interests include music, art, yoga, books, exercise, meditation, and cooking. Amanisoul is a synthesis of the name "Amani" which means harmony and peace in swahili and the word "soul" which means essence or spiritual self. Discovering one's inner peace involves being healthy mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I make it my mission to spread the word on how to achieve balance in all of these areas.
