Week 2 of oil pulling consistently and possible side effects…

I’ve mentioned oil pulling in a previous post.  I’ve been trying different methods of detoxing and still exploring because as with everything else I like variety.  After a while as with any routine sometimes it is good to switch things up a bit to stay motivated and continue to challenge yourself.  I do the same with exercise.  You want to change your routine and/or exercises to continue to challenge your body.  It can become resistant to the same thing over and over again.  So, with that said I have been alternating between drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning and oil pulling.

I’m on week 2 of oil pulling consistently (4-5 days) with a tablespoon of extra virgin, unrefined coconut oil for twenty minutes first thing in the morning.  I swish my mouth with salt water a few times after spitting the oil in the trashcan.  This rids your mouth of residue from the toxin-filled oil.  I don’t want this to be a redundant post as I’ve posted about the benefits and my method several months ago.  This time I have actually been keeping up with the side effects both positive and negative.  It’s been quite different this time around.

Regarding negative experiences, the first week I experienced headaches for two days during the week and intense feelings of hunger.   I have heard that oil pulling increases your metabolism so that may be why.   I skipped the weekend and felt fine.  I was waking up early feeling energetic (I started running again!), was calmer throughout the day, and just felt more clarity mentally.  I picked back up on Monday and was fine but felt sick in the late afternoon on Tuesday.

Tuesday I had a weird experience that scared me just a little.  Not sure if it was due to oil pulling but as I said I really haven’t done anything else differently.  Detoxing affects everyone differently.  I  felt tired (I’m not prone to feeling tired) so I took a short nap and woke up abruptly for some reason.  I laid there for a minute and felt uneasy which led to me feeling flushed.  Then I felt ill…Sick to my stomach ill.  I thought for sure I was going to vomit.  I thought it was the veggie sushi roll I had for lunch.  I prepared to be sick but nothing happened.  This lasted for about fifteen minutes.  Then I drank a little  ginger ale at room temperature and had some crackers.  I was able to keep my food down and felt much better before I even introduced food to my system after that episode.  Later that day I ate something for dinner and felt fine.  I slept like a baby and had no issues when I awoke.

This morning I feel okay.  I still don’t feel like myself.  I don’t think it is serious enough to call a doctor or anything.  I truly think that I may not be drinking enough water to flush the toxins from my body as I am detoxing.  So, I am feeling the effects of detox.  It is not “serious” enough to get medical attention because I am still well enough to do about my day functioning as usual.  If nothing changes of course I will schedule an appointment.  I just feel a little tired and slightly woozy.  These are known side effects.   It is recommended to drink LOTS of water.  I know I have not been doing that. I’m probably drinking the same amount as I was before I started oil pulling consistently.  Shame on me.  I’m trying though.

I can only attribute the side effects to oil pulling because there is nothing else I have been doing differently besides increasing my exercise. I am not one who is prone to headaches either (except around that time of the month). I think I’m experiencing side effects this time around because I am using a tablespoon versus a teaspoon of coconut oil and I am pulling for twenty minutes (before I pulled for 15 mins with a teaspoon of oil). Also, I am doing it back to back not 2 or 3 days here and there during the week. For the rest of the week I’m going to increase my water intake and continue to eat clean.  I opted out of oil pulling this am to just give my body a rest from it.  I know I should probably not have skipped today but I am listening to my body and doing what I think is best for me.  As long as I don’t go several days without it.  Skipping one day is fine.

I’ll report back next week on how I’m feeling.    If you have tried oil pulling or other forms of detox I would love to hear your experiences with it.   Talk to me 🙂

Peace and Love!
