Self-Care Fridays: Start deprogramming yourself with a television fast…

Food fasting isn’t the only fasting we need to do.  For the past few years, I have lessened the amount of television I’ve watched tremendously!  The only regret I have is that I didn’t start sooner.  I remember meeting people who said that they didn’t even own a television while others said that they didn’t watch tv at all.  I used to give them major side eye…lol…Truth is, they were onto something but I had no clue because I was not at that level of consciousness yet.  I still have some shows that I watch but when they are in their “off season” I just take a break from tv altogether.

Currently, I only watch tv in the morning to gauge the weather and traffic.  Sometimes I watch to get a general idea of what’s going on in the world.  At the same time, I don’t believe that everything that’s being reported is 100% truth or fact.  I now know how to decipher what stories are enhanced versus the ones that are accurate.  Anyway,  the point is that the less tv you watch the better off you’ll be.  There’s a saying that television stands for “telling lies visually”.  I’ve grown to learn that there is much truth to this statement.

You’ll find that if you replace your television watching with something that involves being creative, active or doing something mentally stimulating you won’t miss tv time at all.  I actually began watching less tv when I was in grad school.   It wasn’t even an option for me because I was serious about school.  So, it was a no brainer for me to nix the tv.  I had NO time for tv watching unless I watched some shows or a movie with my daughter.   Most of my time was spent preparing for class by either reading, studying, researching  and/or writing papers.  THIS was the catalyst for my wonderful discovery of life without tv which I found to be liberating.  I became very productive and I believe that my brain thanked me for it when I did so.  I could list many reasons to stop watching tv or at least minimize the amount of tv you watch but I think you get the point.

I promise if you decrease your tv watching you will become more productive and/or creative,  your house will be cleaner (if you take time to clean instead of watching tv),  and you will ultimately become happier.  I cannot guarantee all three of these will happen unless you put forth the effort.  You have to start somewhere so why not start today!  Now, tv can be entertaining, educational etc. but it’s still beneficial to just not rely solely on tv for those attributes.  Find other ways to be entertained.  Begin this weekend or next week (whichever you feel most comfortable with) by limiting the amount of tv watching you engage in.  Maybe plan to try a new hobby, make plans for lunch or visiting a museum.  I can think of a million things you can do in place of tv watching.  No need to mention them because y’all get the point!
